SWER can be used for traditional rural electrification, including lighting, and power supply to tv, radio, cookers, refrigerators etc.

With the advent of new technology such as the Written-Pole electric motor, SWER can now be also used for water pumping to spread irrigated farming. There is over 190,000 kilometers of SWER currently in use in rural areas of Australia alone.
