The heart of SWER cost savings is most clearly indicated by the picture on the left, there is only one wire instead of ;

a) two wires used in Europe for single phase distribution or;

b) instead of three wires used in Europe for three phase distribution or;

c) instead of one phase wire and one neutral wire used in the North American single phase distribution system.

The arrangement shown uses a post insulator, pin insulators or pin post insulator can also be used however if lightning is an issue, pin insulators should be avoided.
