Distribution Transformer for Rural Electrification using SWER

The distribution transformer arrangement is for a 16 kVA, 12.7 kV SWER system.

The top of the pole shows the single SWER conductor, a surge arrester (also called a lightning arrester), down to a drop out fuse and then to the 16 kVA transformer. The secondry voltage is 230 0 230 Volts, in this instance the two 230 volt windings have been connected in parallel.

Alternatively by connecting across the two 230 volt windings 460 volts can be derived, this can be used for larger single phase motors for irrigation, or agricultural machinery .
